Your bird is likely an Anna’s as they breed and overwinter on the island. If it is smaller than your usual birds it could be a juvenile.

They are birds of thick forest of all kinds.

You also likely have great-horned owls, and they would live there year long. The two owls have quite different calls though. You can hear a snowy owl call here https://www.bird-sounds.net/snowy-owl/ and then scroll down to hear what a great-horned owl sounds like.

At about 10pm I went outside wearing a headlamp and disturbed a very large very white owl. I didn’t see it’s face just the wingspan as it was flying away from me. It was big, I would say over 1m wingspan and looked pure white although my headlamp may have made it look whiter than it was. We hear owls periodocally round here at night but I have never spotted one before. They make a very loud hoot that turns into a monkey like sound. Was this a snowy owl? Would they be around here in winter?

I’ve listened to the calls and various recordings and seems to match but got a picture and seems to fit all descriptions. The properties in the area are old hardwood forest, which doesn’t seem to fit with what I’ve read about their normal habitat.

Have a look at the Canadian Herpetological Society and check the species photos show there. http://canadianherpetology.ca/species/index.html
